New Gnarls, new M83, New Portishead

Posted in Uncategorized on March 10, 2008 by asslesschaps
  1. The new Gnarls Barkley album (the Odd Couple, out april 8th) is as good or better in our opinion than the previous mega hit (St Elsewhere). I though we’d start this blog entry with this super soul wrenching number from the forthcoming album. Who’s gonna save my soul weakens the knees.
  2.  The overwhelming synth action of M83 has always been a treat. I was little disappointed with the sophmore release, before dawn heals us. It appears however that the upcoming release (Saturdays = youth, out april 14th) is back to form. Enveloping waves of harmonic sounds. The utter bliss of the engulfing racket. Gorgeous. Beat-y but not overtly.
  3. Portishead is releasing another album this spring too. It has been a long 10 year wait…but well worth the wait it appears. Silence is, I believe, the first track on the upcoming release (Third, out in early April). It is deeply percussive and upbeat compared to previous Portishead songs. However, the have kept the razor edged delicacy and emotive power of the previous works.
  4. we have a show tomorrow Tuesday March 11th at Baby Huey’s (70 Ossignton). Come down for a cheap drink and some great music.

The Juan - The Chic

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on March 2, 2008 by asslesschaps
  • Juan Maclean - Happy House We are serving up the freshness (sorta) here. Today we have the upcoming single from the Juan Maclean. I guarantee that this is going to melt faces and destroy dancefloors for the remainder of the year. Super emotive lyrics over a funky bongo infused dub track. I hope y’all like it.
  • Compare and contrast…I have included the recent Todd Terje edit of Chics I want your love which is getting a lot of play these days. It’s a grand song and has always brought a smile to my face when I have heard it out. The edit is pretty slick too. I have also included a Moodymann (I can’t kick this feeling when it kicks) where I believe Todd lifted the idea for the intro of his edit. Either way both tracks are stellar and I am glad everyone is freaking out over Chic again. These tracks are in divshare (undownloadable) format not because we don’t love ya but cuz we want to support the bands and labels that produce the tunes. PLease have a listen and go out and if you like em enough go out and by them. Cheers.

We are back on here. Appologies for delays in updating.  Here we are dusting off some tracks from the vaults. Have a listen. It something we put together back in the day. We was just figuring out how to use the cross fader. Listening to it reminds me of an age of innocence. We were so naive and hopeful. Now, with sinister sneers, we can hardly understand the wide eyed wonder of yore. Get it Here: From the archives

    1.  Tiga - Far from home (DFA remix, instrumental): Ah the instrumental is the only way to go for this track. I still recall hearing this being dropped on Tim Sweeney’s Beats is Space for the first time.
    2. LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations (Lindstrom remix): Ya gotta love Mr Murphy’s track but ya can love it even more when you get the space house touch of Lindstrom on top of it.
    3. Death From Above 1979 - Sexy Results (MSTRKRFT Remix):  Toronto will never be the same for better or  worse since DFA1979 closed shop and MSTRKRFT took all of Jesse F Kealor’s time.
    4. Chicks on Speed - Wordy Rappinghood (Playgroup Remix): I am still bumbed out the Trevor Jackson closed Playgroup down. CoS do Tom Tom Club then reinvisioned by tricky Trevor.
    5.  Kerri Chandler - Barathym: The cowbell in this track drives me wild. Mr Chandler is a spectacular DJ having started at the tender age of 13 in New Jersey. His production is equally great.
    6. Betty Bottox - Is it Sex y’r after: Optimo’s JD Twitch under his editing moniker of Betty Bottox. I can say enough good things about Optimo and Keith. I’ll let the music do the talking.
    7.  M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade - Body Language: I have always had a soft spot for the delicate production of MANDY. If I recall correctly this is the track that really sent Get Physical Records apart as a force to be reckoned with.
    8. Def Inc. - Waking the Dread (Switch Remix): gotta love the techno dancehall-monstrocity. It really does counter the delicacy of the previous track.
    9. Paul McCartney - Temporary Secretary (Radioslave edit): this equally awesome and annoying. I think Sir Macca had totally lost his marbles luckily Serge and Co. edit this into a modern day post-punk-pop sensation.
    10. Soulwax - Another Excuse (DFA remix): what it says on the tin. Exactly what you’d expect from DFA and Soulwax - excellence. I am of two minds about the vocal, could go with or without depending on the position of the moon.
    11. The Slits - I heard it through the grapevine: Those brash young teutonic ladies do the Marvin classic. From 1979’s essential album “Cut”. God I have a crush on Ari Up.
    12. !!! - Me and Giuliani down by the schoolyard: Super political moder post-punk. Everyone must see !!! live before they give up the ghost.
    13. Out Hud - It’s for you: The now defunct Out Hud was my favorite Tyler Pope band (LCD excepted). Love the cutesy vox on this one.
    14. Jah Wobble - How much are they: I just got back from a trip to NYC to attend a Mancuso Loft party. I tell you when you hear this track on a soundsytem like he has you’ll lose your mind.
    15. Celestial Choir - Stand on the Word: Another track that Mancuso and Levan broke and an all time favorite of the Chaps. If you don’t have a giant grin after listening to this then I would recommend checking your pulse.

We have an upcoming show at the Levack block in the back (88 Ossington) this coming Tursday. Come on down and dance away your sorrows. lovekills1.jpg
